This guide will help you understand the various roof types ideal for the local climate and how they can benefit your property.

Choosing the right roofing materials is crucial for homes and businesses in Oklahoma City, OK. The best roof types for this region need to withstand variable weather, from intense sun to tornado threats. Materials like metal roofs offer durability and energy efficiency, while slate provides a long-lasting and elegant option. TPO and EPDM are excellent for flat commercial roofs due to their robustness against leaks and extreme weather. Each material offers unique benefits, ensuring that whether for aesthetic appeal or practical functionality, your roofing choice will stand up to the demands of Oklahoma City’s climate.

Copper roofing is prized for its long lifespan and beautiful patina that develops over time. It is highly resistant to fire and mildew, making it a secure choice for any building.

Steel is a robust roofing material that offers a great balance of durability and cost-effectiveness. It is highly customizable and can be coated to improve its weather resistance.

Aluminum is lightweight and incredibly resistant to corrosion, which makes it an ideal choice for homes and businesses in Oklahoma City, particularly those close to industrial areas.

Shingle roofs are among the most popular roofing types for residential properties due to their affordability and versatility. They come in various materials including asphalt, GAF, Atlas, and architectural styles, offering a range of aesthetic choices to complement any home design.

Asphalt shingles are economical and easy to install, making them a popular choice for many homeowners. They are available in a variety of colors and styles to match any home's exterior.

GAF shingles are known for their quality and durability, offering advanced protection against elements with a wide range of styles and colors.

Atlas offers shingles that feature Scotchgard Protector, which helps prevent black streaks caused by algae, maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the roof.

Architectural shingles are thicker and provide a three-dimensional appearance to the roof. They are heavier and provide better resistance to wind and weather damage.

Maintaining your roof is vital to ensure it withstands Oklahoma City’s unique weather patterns throughout the year. Each season brings different challenges that can affect your roof’s integrity and performance. Here are essential seasonal roofing maintenance tips to help Oklahoma City residents protect their investments:
  • Inspect for Winter Damage: Winter can be harsh on roofs. Start spring with a thorough inspection to check for any signs of damage such as cracked or missing shingles, damaged flashing, or leaks.
  • Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Clear any debris accumulated over the winter to ensure proper water drainage and prevent water backup that could lead to leaks.
  • Check for Heat Damage: The intense summer sun can cause shingles to warp or blister. Inspect your roof for signs of heat damage and consider installing reflective coatings or choosing lighter colored materials in future replacements to reduce heat absorption.
  • Enhance Ventilation: Proper attic ventilation is crucial to prevent heat buildup under your roof, which can shorten its lifespan. Ensure your attic’s vents are not obstructed and work effectively.
  • Prepare for Winter: Remove fallen leaves and debris from your roof and gutters to prevent water pooling and ice damming during the colder months. Check and repair sealants around vents and chimneys, as these can be entry points for water.
  • Trim Trees: Trim overhanging tree branches to prevent them from rubbing against the roof or falling on it during storms, which can cause significant damage.
  • Pre-Winter Inspection: Conduct a detailed inspection before the first freeze. Look for cracks, leaks, or any signs that water has penetrated your roof. Address these issues promptly to prevent further damage during snow and ice accumulation.
  • Monitor Snow Accumulation: Heavy snowfall can put a significant load on your roof. Use a roof rake to gently remove snow from the edges of your roof if it accumulates more than a few inches.
  • Regular Inspections: Schedule professional inspections at least twice a year to identify potential problems early.
  • Prompt Repairs: Address repair needs as soon as possible to prevent minor issues from becoming major. This not only extends the life of your roof but also helps maintain its efficiency and effectiveness in protecting your home.

Selecting the right roofing material is crucial for homeowners and business owners in Oklahoma City, OK, given the area's variable weather, including intense sun, high winds, and potential severe storms. Here are some essential tips to guide you in choosing the best roofing material for your property:

Consider Local Weather Conditions

The roofing material you choose should be capable of withstanding local weather challenges. For Oklahoma City, this means materials that are resistant to wind, hail, and thermal fluctuation. Metal roofs, for example, are excellent for wind and hail resistance, while slate and tile offer great thermal resistance.

Longevity and Durability

Invest in roofing materials that offer long service life and require less maintenance. Metal, slate, and tile are more expensive upfront but offer greater durability and longer lifespans compared to cheaper materials like asphalt shingles.

Energy Efficiency

Consider the energy efficiency of the roofing material, especially given Oklahoma City's hot summers. Materials like metal roofing or light-colored tiles can reflect sunlight, reducing cooling costs and improving indoor comfort.

Aesthetic Compatibility

The roof should complement the architectural style of your property. Slate and tile are ideal for properties with a more traditional or rustic aesthetic, while metal and flat roofing systems might suit modern or commercial buildings better.

Weight of the Material

Ensure that your building's structure can support the weight of the material. Slate and tile are quite heavy, and additional structural support might be necessary, which can increase the overall cost.

Cost and Budget

Set a realistic budget for your roofing project. While it's tempting to go for the cheapest option, consider the long-term costs related to maintenance, energy consumption, and potential replacements. Sometimes, investing a bit more upfront can save more money in the long run.

Local Building Codes and Regulations

Check local building codes and homeowner association guidelines, if applicable, as they may influence your choice of materials based on safety standards or aesthetic uniformity within the community.

Consult with Professionals

Engage with local roofing experts who understand the specific requirements of Oklahoma City properties. They can provide tailored advice based on their experience with different materials in the local climate and can help navigate options considering all the factors mentioned.

Selecting the right roof for Oklahoma City’s unique weather conditions is crucial for ensuring longevity and performance. Given the city’s experience with intense sunlight, high winds, and occasional severe weather events like tornadoes and hail, it’s essential to choose materials that can withstand these elements while maintaining their integrity and aesthetic appeal. Here’s some expert advice:
Opt for roofing materials known for their resilience against high winds and storm conditions. Metal roofing, with its interlocking panels, offers exceptional wind resistance, which is ideal for Oklahoma’s frequent storms.
Reflective roofing materials such as TPO and white tile can reflect UV rays, helping to reduce cooling costs and prevent heat damage during the hot summer months. These materials help maintain a more stable temperature inside the building, enhancing comfort and reducing energy consumption.
Consider materials known for their durability and long lifespan. Slate and tile are excellent choices for residential properties looking for longevity; they can last over 50 years with proper maintenance. For commercial buildings, built-up roofs and modified bitumen offer robust durability and are particularly effective in protecting against varied weather conditions.
For areas prone to hail, choosing impact-resistant materials like rubber roofing or specialized hail-resistant shingles can prevent significant damage. These materials can absorb the shock of hail impact without cracking, a critical feature during Oklahoma’s severe weather seasons.
Evaluate the maintenance needs of different roofing materials. Metal roofs, for example, are relatively low maintenance, while wood shakes may require more frequent upkeep to prevent decay and water damage.
Choose materials that not only perform well but also complement the architectural style of your property. For example, architectural shingles or cedar shakes can add a distinctive look to residential homes, while flat roofs can provide a sleek, modern appearance for commercial buildings.
Consult with local roofing professionals who understand Oklahoma City’s climate and can provide personalized advice based on your specific location within the city and the architectural style of your building. Their experience can be invaluable in making a choice that balances aesthetic desires with functional needs.

I hired First Construction to replace my storm damaged roof with an impact-resistant one in 2016 and … More to replace the roof on the property I was managing in 2017. They did a fantastic job from start to finish and were very professional, courteous, and efficient. They gave me free estimates, explained the different options, and answered all my questions. They completed the work on time and within budget. The new roofs look amazing and are still in create shape after countless hailstorms in Norman. I am delighted with their service and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable and effective roofing company.

I called another company at first to figure out why water was getting into my sunroom when it rained. … More They told me that a lot of the shingles would have to be taken off and then replaced down to a certain area which was approximately $4,000 to $7,000. Zoen Finch who is the owner's son is a good friend of a friend of mine. I called him out he took a look at it and he said it's definitely the drip edge and he could get this problem solved for about $700. He came out did the work and I've never had an issue with water getting into my sunroom for the past 3 years. I then needed a new roof in which I got insurance involved. I called Zone again and he met with the adjuster and got my entire roof replaced as well as the decking updated as I have an older house all in the price that the insurance covered. This company is by far the best company for Roofing and Construction. I would recommend them to friends family or anyone as I'm in the service industry too and referrals do make a lot of the difference if you do a good job. This gentleman has helped me out so much that I would refer him to anybody. This summer he's probably going to take a look at my pool house even though I haven't told him about it yet in order to get it updated and revamped as it has a lot of rotting wood due to rain and poor construction. This company is the freaking best, ask for Zoen Finch and he will get your problems resolved as well as be a very respectable hard-working young man.

We're in the middle of a real estate transaction and the buyers required the roof to be replaced … More before we could close escrow---so timing has been important. The first thing I experienced with First Construction Corp was how quickly Caleb responded. His inspection was thorough and pricing was very fair. I asked him to price a couple of extra items on the buyer's list of "to-dos" that could be done at the same time as the roof. Again, he was responsive, accommodating, and gave us a fair price. The project was started quickly and finished quickly. We live out of state, so I've been trying to do all of this remotely. Caleb kept us apprised of his schedule, sent pictures at several times during the roof and gutter replacement, and even took the time to let the buyers contact him to choose the shingle color. Being out of state, I had someone local inspect the roof, gutters, and other work completed by First Construction before I cut the final check. There was not a single issue or complaint. I would whole-heartedly recommend First Construction Corp. Very professional. Well done.

In Oklahoma City, the most popular roofing types for homes include asphalt shingles due to their cost-effectiveness and ease of installation, metal roofs for their durability and energy efficiency, and slate for its longevity and aesthetic appeal. Each offers unique benefits tailored to the diverse weather conditions of the region.
For commercial buildings, TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) and EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) are highly recommended due to their durability against extreme weather conditions and excellent life span. Metal roofing is also a popular choice for its robustness and low maintenance requirements.
Yes, several eco-friendly roofing options are available, including green roofs, which are covered with vegetation that helps with insulation and reduces heat absorption. Solar tiles, which integrate photovoltaic cells to generate electricity, and cool roofing materials, which reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat, are also viable options.
Choosing the right roof type depends on several factors, including your building’s architectural style, your budget, and specific weather resistance needs. It’s advisable to consult with a professional roofing contractor who can assess your property and recommend the best options based on the local climate and your personal preferences.

The lifespan of roofing materials can vary widely:

  • Asphalt shingles last about 20-30 years.
